This is England

This is England shows a good use of convergence because there were a lot of companies which got evolved with this project. Because Channel 4 helped with advertising on their television channel by putting them in adverts between programs and after the film was released at the cinemas channel 4 showed it before any other channel did even before they got released on DVD.  Channel 4 gets given ten million to invest in films and this helps because if they put a small amount of money into a film they will get the screening rights and will advertise them as well. Another film which channel 4 have invested in is Slumdog millionaire which was chart topping for a long time and one of the most popular film of that time and especially in England because that is where it originated from. Whereas the UK film council have twenty seven million from the lottery and twenty seven million from the government money to distribute to films. Other smaller companies come and help towards the funding for example EM media bringing £250,000 to this is England because they want people to know about east midlands because it was in the film also screen Yorkshire gave money because they want to also advertise where they are in the world and why people should visit their area in the UK. The UK film council gave £668,000 from the new cinema fund to this is England project also 90,000 from the prints and advertising fund. There is also other fund like the development fund, premiere fund which help towards the funding of this is England. All of the funding goes to Warp films because they are the production team who will be making and producing the film. After the film has been completed then it will go to the distribution company in this case Optimum releasing which distribute the film to cinemas and also do the advertising while the film is being made for example they would make the posters and the DVD cover when it is released. The film this is England was distributed to sixty two cinemas in the first week and went up in the following weeks but went down as everyone had already seen it in the last weeks but as a whole this is England stayed in the cinemas for fifteen weeks. After all the money for this is England had been collected in IMDB said that the total budget for this is England was 1.5 million where as the EM media site said that the total budget for this is England was 2.25 million but this could have included the distribution and marketing which does not include with this is England filming and the production side of things. I think that the convergence way of producing a film is the best way for all the companies because from this is England it shows that all companies can make a profit and advertisement. Another good reason for more film being done the convergence way is to cut down on companies expenditures because companies don’t have enough money to completely pay for the production of a film and by only paying a small bit this allows the company to allow for more films to pay towards ending up in more advertising for that company then just one expensive film.

Audiences and Institutions research

The age band which most is interested in cinema is 7 to 34 year olds because they have less to do and can spend their money on cinema not on a mortgage or rent for a house. The specific age group which attend the cinema the most are 15 to 24 year olds as they are old enough to get a job but not to old that they don’t have to pay any bills. The download activity compared to the cinema attendance shows that more 15 to 24 year olds download films because they know how to do that compared to older people who have no idea in to how to download a film and also older people are scared of getting caught. For 15 to 24 year olds Bruno was the most watched film by 60% because it was made specifically for that age group.  The biggest UK film for 15 to 24 year olds is the boat that rocked which got 48% of the film’s total audience. Also Hangover, Fast and Furious where big hits last year for 15 to 24 year olds. The films which appealed to an older generation are the young Victoria which is a period film made in the UK, last chance Harvey which is a romantic film. These films both fit their age group because the older generation do not want to see thriller or action packed films. The films which crossed over age groups are monsters vs. aliens because this is a film for a young audience which can’t go to the cinema on their own so have to go with their parents who are aged from 35 to 45 on average. Also other films like UP appeal to a cross audience because this is also a Childs film. This is one reason why most films for a younger audience get the most interest because there are to age gaps that will be paying compared to a thriller film which usually attracts 15 to 24 year olds. The film UP has had a big hit in the UK because it is a UK made film. The film UP’s budget was $175,000,000 and made an interest gross of $293,004,164 until the 5th of October 2009. The distributors for the film UP are Walt Disney Studio’s. The companies behind their production are Walt Disney pictures and Pixar animation studios, which both are leading production teams for younger audience’s films.  Pixar have also been involved with the making of all toy stories films, Wall.e, Cars, the Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, A bug’s life and Ratatouille. Walt Disney pictures have been involved with Beauty and the Beast, Camp Rock 2 and Toy Story 3. The mission statements for both of these companies are about the same and that is to make film interesting and enjoyable for a younger audience but in the mean time make it good enough that older people like the films as well. The synergy in both of the production teams is to create an interactive website to encourage them to want to watch the film for example they make a game which evolves characters of the film to make the user watch the film to know who the characters are and the plot. They use contrasting colours to make the image stand out for example the blue UP font colour and the white background also the font style on the UP represents the use of going up because the UP font is slanted.

Uk Film Council

The UK film council is the government backed lead agency for film in the UK  ensuring that the economic, cultural and educational aspects of the film are effectively represented at home and abroad.
The UK film council supports script development, film production, short films, film education, cultures and archives, festivals and audience support schemes.
The UK film council supports filmmakers in the UK who are emerging or world class and are capable of creating distinctive and entertaining work. They have £15 million a year to invest across the development, production and the completion of feature films.
One of the UK film council funds are prints and advertising fund which is designed to widen and support the distribution and marketing strategy of specialised films and to offer support to more commercially focused British films that nevertheless remain difficult to market.

Microwave Scheme

The microwave scheme is a scheme which helps small film makers publicise their film by giving them small amounts of money usually about £100,000. This can work because the microwave scheme takes in a percentage of the money the film makers earn. For example the film Shifty had the microwave scheme behind it which means ten percent of the money the film makes goes to the film London microwave scheme.
The microwave scheme has helped in the making of Shifty which is about the life of a Muslim drug dealer, Mum and Dad which is a horror film set around London Heathrow airport, Freestyle which is a teen romance set in the world of free style basketball and many more.
The microwave scheme was interested with the making of shifty because the film makers wanted to make a business which is what the microwave scheme wants to create as their goal not just one of productions which don’t help towards their brief.
